The hardest, and best, thing I’ve ever done was to learn mindful eating. As a widowed single mom who’d lost both parents, I was sure that plowing through life and staying extremely busy kept me one step ahead in the game of life and this included my food habits.

I would gobble down my food, eat standing in front of the refrigerator and eat low quality meals in the car without concern for my suffering health. It was time for a change. I knew I needed to learn to eat with attention, savor and truly taste every single bite of luscious food I put in my mouth. Although I wanted to change, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Before I could transform my relationship with food and my life, I had to slow down and truly listen to what my body needed. I had to change my habits and fast passed multi-tasking lifestyle. This seemed like an insurmountable chore especially when I tried to figure it out by myself.

Why is mindful eating important?

When you learn to eat vibrantly, you learn to live vibrantly.

When we pay attention to how specific foods and behaviors impact our body, we can start to make better choices about what foods we eat and how we eat them. You may find that you have these same bad habits and that they’re hard to break. I promise you: it’s worth it! Mindfulness will change your life.

Now that I’ve learned to eat mindfully, the changes are so amazing that I want to share that knowledge with you! When you eat mindfully, you feel nourished. You eat with pleasure, slow down and experience the nuances of the meal. These tools allow me to truly embrace the vibrant and wonderful life that I’m living. I so want that for you too!

What is mindful eating?

The bottom line is: if you are eating while overloaded with stimuli, you are telling you body “don’t digest.” Mindful eating means being present, really tasting your food and being alert to the details of your meal. This is totally the opposite of how most of my clients are eating when they first see me. They are spending their energy and attention on the computer, cell phone or driving while they eat.

Habits are so hard to break when you’re trying to figure it out by yourself, but now you don’t have to! Here are my simple steps that you can embrace now to start eating mindfully and bring more joy and happiness to your life:

How to start eating mindfully:

  • Completely focus your mind on the ‘process’ of eating.

  • Take it moment by moment and focus on the here and now.

  • Sit down and put the food on your plate.

  • Use beautiful dishes and possibly light a candle.

  • Look at your food, noting the different colors and shapes.

  • Smell the food and savor it’s aroma.

  • Take a small bite and chew it well (at least 15 times).

  • Savor the tastes and textures of the food.

  • Be thankful and enjoy each and every bite.

  • Breathe deeply while you eat to fuel your digestive fire.

  • Only eat when you are truly hungry for food.

  • Notice when you are full and quite eating (this can happen in mid bite.

Eating is life and mindful eating is the hardest and best thing I’ve ever done. Breaking bad habits is not always easy, but it is always worth it. Celebrate food, celebrate your good fortune, honor the body and vibrantly play the game of life. Mindful eating makes food sexy, seductive, nourishing and fun.
